The terrain also shapes demand. Steep gradients, tight corners and wet mountain roads push buyers toward automatic gearboxes, compact body styles, and engines with enough torque to handle altitude. The Certidão Permanente do Veículo can be checked online at registoautomovel.mj.pt using the registration plate. It shows whether the vehicle carries any registered charges, has been used as loan collateral, or has disputed ownership. This check takes five minutes and costs nothing.

The IUC (Imposto Único de Circulação) is the annual road tax. Confirm it is paid up to the current date before completing any purchase. Unpaid IUC transfers to the new owner automatically upon registration.

The IPO (Inspecção Periódica Obrigatória) is the roadworthiness certificate, equivalent to an MOT in the UK or a TÜV in Germany. Check the most recent result and when the next inspection is due. A failed or expired certificate is a significant flag.

Service history is inconsistently maintained in island markets. Not all owners use official dealers, and informal records such as receipts or workshop notes still provide useful context. Ask for whatever is available.

Registration for EU Nationals

EU nationals already registered as residents at a Junta de Freguesia in Madeira can complete a vehicle transfer at the Conservatória do Registo Automóvel within 20 working days of purchase. You will need your NIF, proof of address, and the DUA signed by the seller. Registration transfer fees typically fall between €100 and €200 depending on the vehicle.

If you have not yet completed residency registration, a foreign-plated vehicle can remain on its original registration for up to six months. Re-registration after that period involves ISV (Imposto Sobre Veículos), which can be substantial depending on age and emissions. A local gestor or Madeira Corporate Services can advise on the specific calculation before you commit.

What Island Driving Does to a Car

Mountain routes are demanding on mechanical components. A vehicle with 80,000 km accumulated on Madeiran gradients has worked considerably harder than a mainland car with the same reading on the odometer. Pay close attention to brake pad thickness, clutch bite point, and any hesitation in the gearbox during a test drive.

Salt air exposure is a factor along the southern coast and particularly along the north coast from São Vicente to Porto Moniz. Inspect the undercarriage, wheel arches and lower body panels for early corrosion. Surface rust in these areas is not uncommon on older vehicles that have spent their lives near the Atlantic.

Intense UV on the south-facing coast accelerates interior wear. Cracked dashboards, faded plastics and oxidised exterior paint are common on vehicles over seven or eight years old. These are cosmetic issues but useful in negotiation.

A Practical Checklist Before You Sign

Run the Certidão Permanente check online before visiting. Confirm IUC is paid and ask for proof. Check the IPO certificate date and result. Test drive on a slope and pay attention to clutch, brakes and gearbox response. Inspect the undercarriage for rust, particularly on coastal and northern-route vehicles. Test all electrics including air conditioning and sensors. Ask for any available service records. Confirm the seller name on the DUA matches the registered owner.
